Matthew Hansen attended the University of Western Australia, completing medical school in 1982. Following this, he worked in the Western Australian public hospital system doing general surgery and then plastic surgery training, completing FRACS in plastic surgery in 1991.
Following completion of plastic surgical training, he went on to do another 3 years of fellowship in craniofacial, head and neck, and skull-base surgery, initially in Oxford in the United Kingdom, then at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, and finally with world renowned plastic and craniofacial surgeon Ian Jackson in Michigan.
He returned to Perth in 1995, commencing private practice in West Perth and public practice at Royal Perth Hospital and Princess Margaret Hospital. He was head of department of plastic surgery at Royal Perth Hospital from 2003 to 2006, before focusing his public hospital work on craniofacial surgery at Princess Margaret Hospital and the new Perth Childrens’ Hospital where he continues to work today. He was head of the department of plastic and reconstructive surgery at PMH from 2013 to 2016.
Matt is a founding member of the Australian Society of Cranio-Maxillo Facial Surgeons and was president of the society in 2012 and 2013. He is also a founding member of the Australian and New Zealand Head & Neck Society. He was president of the West Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons in 2009 and 2010, and the Western Australian representative of the Board of Training for Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons for the Royal Australian College of Surgeons from 1997 to 2003.
He continues to be involved with the training of plastic surgeons both through Princess Margaret Hospital and in the private system. He supports and is involved in overseas aid programmes via the Rafiki Programme in Africa and Interplast as well as supporting Operation Rainbow.
